Hello community, as one who reads many posts but does not post much on my own, I have a question about torrents. If I download the torrent software from utorrents, does it then work like napster or kazaa did or does it work like Itunes, can someone please help. I normally stream to real audio but was interested in torrents. I can most likely figure it out but looking for some guidelines to the utorrent. One last question, do the torrents have better sound quality than mp3's and can you import them to your itunes like real audio does or is the torrent sound the same as what you get at the LIA? I am a huge ipod user, so I know the sound quality is different than flac but I use my ipod all the time. Thanks community for any help you can give me

Basically "torrents" are just tiny files that allow software like utorrent to identify and capture the millions of bits of data that other people send flying around the internets for whatever specific file you are trying to download. Once your computer downloads and assembles enough of the data, it starts to upload as well, hence the "sharing" element of using torrents. So the torrent file is like a gateway to allow you to download whatever flac, shn, or mp3 you find that others are sharing. As a tip to being an upstanding member of the community, it is considered the least you could do to ensure that you upload (or share) at a minimum as much as you download.

Stuff like uTorrent and BitTorrent works more or less like Kazaa and Napster, yeah, but not quite - to download a torrent, you first have to find a .torrent file of the thing you want to download. sites like bt.etree.org and www.shnflac.net are examples of places where you can get .torrent files. Once you download the .torrent, you open it up in uTorrent and the download will begin. Depending on your internet configurations the download might be fast or slow, but if you choose a torrent with a lot of seeders (usually it tells you how many seeders before you download the .torrent file) it should be reasonably fast.

Torrents are usually "lossless" as opposed to the "lossy" mp3 files you can download here at the archive, which means in theory torrent files have better quality, but I've never been able to tell the difference between a high-quality mp3 and a lossless audio track.

When you download a torrent of a show the files will usually be in either .shn or .flac16 / .flac24 format, so you will either need an audio player that handles those formats or you will need to download some free software to convert the files to mp3.

MC , I just began playing this game , after thinking about it for a long time . I have dl the bt from ut , then using VLC media player to access the files . I would like to convert the files to another format ( specifically , so I can place them in itunes ) . I began looking around yesterday , as to how to do this . Do you have a short cut that you know of ? A site ,ect .
No worries if there is not , I'll figure it out , or get stuck ( like a pig ) . Thanks MC . Have a good weekend .

ps - How do I know that I am a seeder , after my dl ?

I'm not MC, but w/e

Just do nothing after downloading a file and you should automatically be seeding. You can keep the torrent file open indefinitely in your torrent client for seeding, and turn it on and off when you want to start or stop seeding. Most if not all torrent clients will show you a list of torrents you have available for seeding once you have downloaded something.

I use winamp to convert my shn and flac files for use in my ipod. The plugins you use to activate this functionality in winamp are all available on etree.org. There are two separate plugins for flac and shn. Alternatively you can browse with winamp forums for info.

edit to add: I should clarify that I use winamp to convert flacs and shns to WAV files, which I then add to iTunes and then use iTunes to convert to mp3. There's probably a faster way to do this directly from FLAC/SHN to MP3, but it's become so routine for me this way that I have not sought out another method. And all this is free software. Check out this website for a step by step guide for flac to mp3. It uses older versions of the iTunes and winamp software as their examples, but it still works very similarly in the updated versions.

I reread my post and realized that I was leaving out the important step of converting the WAV to MP3. I do this procedure so often it has become second nature and I didn't think about it completely. Hence the edit. Is that what you mneant by gap in posting? And when I posted the link where I originally got the information years ago, I saw that in the interim MC had posted the same link below. Oh well, just trying to help.

Oh now I see what you mean by gap in posting, you mean from 2006 to 2010. I could tell you I was doing hard time for trying to smuggle 40 punds of weed over the mexican border. But while that would make for an amusing diversion, it would be a lie.

The truth is I downloaded so much material from the archive before soundboards went streaming only that I did not have much interest in streaming. And my interest in searching through the dross for quality auds was limited. So I just didn't come here very much. I was lurking now and then and became tempted by all the wonderful upgrades made available over the years. And finally couldn't resist joining in the fun once again here on the forums. I regret my initial outburst upon returning but I am a highly emotional individual. I'll try to keep it in check in the future.

It wouldn't be too credible either, as it doesn't seem like it's too difficult to get away with smuggling 40 pounds of whatever ...

if you are on a mac, use this (free) software:
